There are different dog breeds that are recognized by the American Kennel Club and these different dog breeds have different qualities and traits that are important to dog owners. You can learn about what dog breed is right for you if you have a basic knowledge about different dog breeds.

Sporting Breeds

Dogs in this category of breeds have qualities and instincts that make them especially suited for participating in sporting activities and this includes retrievers, setters, spaniels and pointers. These dogs are aware of their surroundings, will remain on watch under your command and are ready for action in water and forested areas depending on the breed. This spirited dog also requires regular exercise for optimum health.

Bred for hunting and killing vermin, the terrier does not want any other dog or animal competition in the house and will have to be able to integrate into a household with pets carefully so that everyone is happy. These energetic dogs have special coat care requirements.

Toy Breeds

These dogs are bred for their fine qualities as companions and are popular because the greater ease that comes with caring and training for a smaller dog than that of a large dog. These dogs are valued for their appealing looks and for the love that they provide to their owners. Examples of toy breeds include the Chihuahua, Maltese, Affenpinscher and Shih Tzu.

Non-Sporting Breeds

There is more diversity in this group of dog breeds than in the other breed groups and these differences include qualities, care, size, coat, appearance and temperament. The bulldog, Finnish spitz, poodle and the Tibetan spaniel are examples of some of the dogs in this group.

Herding Breeds

These intelligent companion dogs have been used historically as herding dogs that are able to control the movements of cows, goats and sheep. When a herding dog is a family member, it may steer its family members in the directions that it thinks are best as a part of its daily activities. The Beauceron, Canaan dog and the Shetland sheepdog are some members of the herding breed.

Miscellaneous Breeds

These different dog breeds are purebred and many have official recognition from the American Kennel Club registration. Examples of miscellaneous breeds include the Norwegian buhund and the Redbone coonhound. The AKC does not recognize many different dog breeds that are purebred.
